A bit of cold water
New season starts well
My 2012 season was completed in beauty. The 2013 season began with more gentle. Indeed, two races have already done: the first two rounds of the french cup, qualifying heats for the World Championships which take place in the United States of America in September.

European Freestyle Championships
This period has been quite busy for me which is why you wont have heard from me lately. Late may held all of my exams, the lead up to which was full (kind of full) of frantic revision and coursework deadlines which has meant my time on the water has suffered. I must admit, it has been quite nice to have a month or so out because i came back refreshed and excited to paddle which is something i was struggling with before hand with the long weeks on the same features at Nottingham!
The euros in Lienz offered the perfect holiday to unwind and enjoy myself. I arrived a week before the competition and i was thrilled to be back since the last europeans here in 2010. Lienz is a really scenic part of Austria and the weather is amazing at this time of year! The atmosphere was great with everyone having fun and making the most of the weather and water. Most of all, i enjoyed seeing the people i had met at previous competitions and making new friends. The river levels at this spot were really inconsistant which gave everyone the perfect excuse to go and relax by the pool, several minor injuries were sustained as expected from the diving boards! 2+1/4 Frontflip. Couldnt of ended worse…

Everyone had fun at the opening ceremony. It was hard not to with free beer all night! Obviously, Great Britain were on best behaviour…

Which is why i had to join the German team!!!

The competition commenced and Britain were strong through the rounds with the majority of paddlers making semis/finals. The seal launch upstream took its toll on my boat just before finals. I can only assume it is performance enhancing because this run was my best score!

The senior mens class was intense. British paddlers Pringle and James Weight both made the cut to the finals and finished 3 and 4 with some truly impressive scores. The top two spots however were claimed by Quim Fontane Maso (Spain) and Seb Devred (France).

The end result was brilliant with my good friends Bren Orton and Sam Stephenson in 1 and 3 respectively and myself in second. The battle between Bren and I was close but the best man won by a lead of 1.667 points. This summer i hope to perfect my shuvits!

The event was amazing, the parties, the people, the venue. The kayaking was allright too! Now i am back i look forward to a long (not long enough) summer of travelling and kayaking.
Thanks loads to everyone involved!

Pyrénées buddies race 2012
Many people came this weekend, from all France and also from 7 other countries as Vénézuela, from canada still from Austria, from Italy and from Spain. All togather on the theme of the paddle on the Mountain stream of Brousset .

This discipline, particularly spectacular, consists in going down a precarious river as fast as possible. In this purpose, the kayakers had to choose the best line, manage their effort and use movements of water. Several of races allowed every kayakers to express themselves: race, Extrem Slalom and race by team.
Eric deguil(AWP champion) win the singe overal and the french team Caihol, Grollemund, Coldebela win the team race.
The municipality of Laruns who welcomed competitor and organizer, also lived as the sound of the event with a projection of movie on Friday evening and a party opened to all on Sundays evenings. As underlines it the mayor of Laruns ” this demonstration open the summer season in beauty “.
Big thanks to duemstuff and rok for their support on this project!!!

High water level in South West of France
The rains of recent weeks have ended up making up the rivers, despite the advanced state of drought in which we were.
Most artificial dams that spoil our beautiful rivers have given way to good waves, to our delight. Aiguillon, last dam before the confluence of the Lot and the Garonne river, gave us a whole new wave, never tested before. And what a wave ! Slide, bounce, and fifteen meter wide. HAPPINESS !!
It rained a lot. It snowed a lot. Spring will be good !

Indonesia 2012
I flew to Jakarta, where I met with the rest of the crew and flew to Lampung. Here our local friends pick up us and with support of army we start to prepare for the first river, Way – semong. They have paddled the lower part of this river many years ago, but nobody did the upper part, which is approximately 13km more. Few years ago, they did some scouting, but most of the information was not usefull. Anyway, it was a very nice river with some box gorges, class IV-V, but everything runable. We did around 25km of this river.
Gladiator of the Sluice + Video
Last weekend saw the first ever Gladiator of the Sluice competition. This comp was held in the evening and ran into the late hours of the night. As the light faded the competition really came to life with the full effect of the lighting and strobes coming into action. The hole was set up with a curtain entry and paddlers began their run under a flurry of fake snow and smoke! It really was the best UK competition I have ever been to and I hope it sets the standard for future ones. The atmosphere was incredible and every aspect of the event was well organised.
Kayaking wise, I was really impressed with the extremely high standard of paddling – particularly in the senior mens class with more 1000+ scores than ever before. A big trick competition was also ran and was won by Rob Crowe (who else!), a king of the wave session happened to finish and James Weight was the last man standing!
I cant wait for the next competition in this style and i can only hope they will become more regular than annual! Jon Best ran the event and the organisers and judges deserve a huge thankyou! If you couldnt make it this time, dont miss out again on the next one! www.gladiatorofthesluice.co.uk/
Here is a video summary of the event from Bren Orton, Jack Gunter and Martyn Butler.

Winter in the UK and beginning of the season
Winter this year has been fairly quiet for me, especially in terms of kayaking. I havnt done much paddling since December but it is also nice to have a break before the next season and i’m really looking forward to the summer!
In February i went snowboarding in Austria with my friends Richard Chrimes and Matt Chadder. We were blessed with huge amounts of snow and great conditions all week. It was my first time snowboarding and i couldnt of had a better time! I will certainly be returning, hopefully in the near future.
By the beginning of March it was already starting to feel a bit like summer with blue skies and temperatures finally above ten! On several occaisions i have even been able to use my new neo combo which is perfect for sunny days. The season over here really kicks off next weekend though, with Gladiator of the Sluice, a cool sounding event run by Jon Best in Nottingham (not to be confused with the Irish’s playspot!).

Cant wait! I am also really pleased to have joined the Wavesport team and i look forward to paddling the project x more in the lead up to the euros in Austria. I will write again next week with news from the Gladiator event but in the meantime i will leave you with a short video from the weekend… :)
