Wacko on the Jacko BoaterX in Ireland

I’m just back from a BoaterX race on the river Annamoe, County Wicklow. The race consisted of a few nice technical rapids with rocks etc. and down jacksons falls. The event was approriately named Wacko on the Jacko. Early Saturday we had the individual races on the short course, 4 in each heat with 2 heats for the Junior Men, I had a head to head battle with my paddling partner and close friend, Shane Little, I came through to win the heat, but the first 2 in each heat got into the final, which means Shane got in too. A bit later we had the Final, again myself and Shane got really good starts and left the other guy behind, we were neck and neck when Shane got the advantage above the falls and flew in to take the victory, I was a little disappointed but happy for him and happy I still got 2nd. Later, we had the Team event on the short course with a twist….one member of a team had to throw a paddle threw a hoop, another member had to do a roll on a certain section of the river and the final member had to slap a sign above the falls, my Team, Myself, Shane Little and Conor Macken, took the victory in that. Then, Finally this morning we had the Team event on the Long Course, a course of 2 km. We kept the same team. After a huge team effort we came through in a very respectable time of 12min 37sec, beating some of the Expert Men’s teams and winning Junior Mens by a full minute. Needless to say it was a great weekend. For more information on the Wacko on the Jacko see wacko.ie

Cahyana and Tung Tung Gunung

Cahyana and Tung Tung Gunung

As promised, I’m posting some kayaking pictures from the past few days. Most pictures were made by Puji Haryanto and Tirtaseta crew: I was taking care of a video camera :)

Cahyana

Our Saturday’s mission was Cahyana, a river Tirtaseta calls their playground. It is not hard to imagine why. Did you ever imagine an artificial slalom course with some waterfalls? When I was a kid I was fantasizing about something like that. Cahyana has an artificial irrigation channel with waterfalls up to a few meters high. Flat – waterfall – flat – waterfall,… Well actually it even starts with a waterfall. It is a fun but not intimidating run. I can’t wait till we do it again.

Australia 2011

Australia 2011

On January 31st I packed my shorts and summer Duemstuff gear and left the snowsuit and drytops behind. When I left my house in Calgary, Canada it was -27 degrees Celsius, when I got to Sydney, Australia 26 hours later it was +42 degrees! I will be training and racing here in Australia for a month and so far it has been great. This weekend the Penrith Whitewater Center (which was host of the 2000 Olympics) will be the sight of the Australian Open. My coach, Michal Staniszewski, was 2nd at the 2000 Olympics here in Penrith and I think his expert knowledge of the course will givme the edge

.

Australia

Australia

Sooo,
I am in Australia for 3 weeks now and I will stay one more week here in Penrith. The slalom course is really nice for training. It is the olympic venue from 2000 where teh German Thomas Schmidt took the Goldmedal, so it is a special place for me to do my training. Cause I remember watching his run when I was 12 years old.
I did a lot of hard sessions till now. It is really great to to do my work out in the summer of australia. At the end of this week the australian open will be host in Sydney, I am looking forward to the first big international competition of the year.

cheers
Schubi

On the rocks!

On the rocks!

Long time no blog. Greetings from a beatiful, but ice cold, Baltic Sea. Kayaking in the mid winter can be pretty rough or like this day…just a walk in the park.

Cheers!

Indonesia

Indonesia

Finally I made it to the internet to post a few pictures from my Indonesian mission. I am being hosted here by Central Javanese whitewater kayak community Tirtaseta. They have been keeping me so busy that I hardly get any time to write and arrange my pictures.

Meeting the Tirtaseta community

We only managed to paddle their local River Klawing so far as I am holding some kayak teaching and river rescue courses here. But the scenery is so amazing and the water so warm that I am really enjoying the experience.

Straight away second day guys brought me to 11m Penisihan waterfall at their local Klawing river, some 20 min away from our house. It is yet to be runfor the first time. Hopefully in the next days, if it rains.
